I can't remember the last sermon that I heard on the aversion of God's wrath through substitutionary atonement, and I have sat under some phenominal preachers and ministers of the word in the past few years. That doesn't begin to take into account the dozen or so podcast sermons I take in each week.

So what then? If the reality is that we are losing this concept in our understanding, and it's possible that the popular sub-culture movement of emergence is proposing the discarding of this dogma or doctrine, then how does a post-modern practicing evangelical live and proclaim substitutionary atonement (including the act of propitiation that Christ became) while maintaining open ties of love and community? We are past the time of fist-pounding on pulpits, or apologetically proofing our way into people's thought processes. How do I sit down for a taco with my brothers and sisters and seek to embrace the meaning of the cross with them?Joelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01451623898680973067noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24859567.post-1147104661440510402006-05-08T09:11:00.000-07:002006-05-08T09:11:00.000-07:00I mentioned this article in passing while leading ...I mentioned this article in passing while leading communion this past Sunday. Seems to me we should wander around the cross a few times more just to see all it holds. Its unfortunate that we are losing, or at least are told we should lose, the idea of substitution and sacrifice.

By the way, loved Tim Keller's article in the same issue of CT on the church in the city!Ron Bakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02868715672771975946noreply@blogger.com
